HISTORY

The San Lorenzo Convent is located at the very heart of the Valtellina wine-growing area.

Its vineyard, referred to as clos and guarded by ancient walls, is unique within the terraced landscape of the province of Sondrio. Constructed in 1100, the vast mansion complete with adjoining church was donated shortly afterwards to the Benedictine nuns who were to take good care of it together with the surrounding lands, and over the centuries it was to become one of the oldest monasteries in the diocese of Como. The Convent has always maintained a central role within the community in spite of a range of historical events such as the Protestant Reformation, the plague and the Napoleonic inroads. The nuns, in their vital work as educators, were supported by local noble families but also by their own handiwork, including the production of wine. It's hard not to reflect on the mark left by many lives dedicated both to prayer and work over the differing periods of history and you can sense within, the will that it be occupied once more by those who clearly understand its spiritual, historical and cultural values.

Philosophy

The vineyards of the San Lorenzo Convent are inextricably linked to the history and vocation of the Valtellina Superiore Sassella Docg production area.

Only thanks to the tenacity and sensitivity of the winemaker can they so intensely express the identity of their terroir. The rows, cultivated on terraces sustained by centuries-old stone walls, are located along the Rhaetian Alpine slopes at between 400 and 600 metres, south-facing. They rest on a predominantly rocky and sandy soil formed by debris of glacial origin and have an east-west propensity, that is a girapoggio, an agricultural arrangement to increase exposure to the sun and facilitate agronomic practices. The selection of the finest clones of Nebbiolo, the indigenous Valtellina grape variety with an unrivaled genetic heritage, determines the finesse and purity of expression of the wines produced courtesy of the experience, diligence, patience and humility of the producer who has been educated by nature itself.
